Add a little sparkle to your life. Decorating with glass doesn’t have to be expensive. Pressed glass can add a bit of sparkle to your table or filled with shells or bead can be an inexpensive center piece. We have gone so far as to fill punch bowl cups with a bit of soil and wheatgrass seed. It sprouts in a matter of days an brings an early spring to dreary February day.

During the holiday season there is a great opportunity to tap into your creative genius. The opportunity can arise when you are decorating the tree, or when you are decorating other parts of the house. Try to step out of your comfort zone when decorating and use colors that are outside the traditional colors such as aqua or fuchsia. Entertaining for the holidays is always a delight. Even with smaller groups, there are great options for entertaining with simplicity. One option includes setting aside a specific part of the sitting room that will allow guests to congregate and mingle. The above picture is a recent display created at the English Market that does just that. By setting up a certain area and tailoring it to a certain theme, guests are immediately given the opportunity to mingle, drink and enjoy your space without the inconvenience of having separate areas throughout the house. Most likely, wherever the beverages are located the guests with congregate. A well decorated section of your living space can also serve dual purposes: holiday decorations, and entertaining. According to a recent article in Self Magazine, there are six basic steps that you can take to ensure your holiday party will be enjoyable. One of the most important on the list involves keeping things simple but fun. If your space in any indication of simplicity, your guests are sure to enjoy themselves and the preparation will cause you minimal stress.

Decorating with books has always been a tradition in many households. Many book lovers and avid readers find it effortless to maintain an established library or study. For the average person however, maintaining books without bookshelves can be a bit of a chore. In the book True Prep, which is the sequel to The Preppy Handbook, the author Lisa Birnbach says, ““People with money are increasingly decorating with books, which pleases me, since often the TV is now the library’s centerpiece.” Not that this should be the standard by which you decorate, however, there is something to be said for a neatly stacked pile of books with a picture frame on top and your favorite house plant on the other side. Decorating is a skill that is acquired for some but effortless for others. This Friday there is a great opportunity to create or add to your book collection. On November 18th, the Bourse is hosting a Books and Brandy event which is open to the public. There are a number of books from the Men’s Institute Library for sale. After the success of the first book sale, The Institute library and The Bourse are hosting a second opportunity to purchase fine books as well as a chance to enjoy the amazing space at the Bourse. Meet and mingle with Executive Director Will Baker of the Young Men’s Institute library as well as The Bourse owners Robert and Carol Orr. Don’t miss out on this awesome event.

There are three weeks left before Thanksgiving and for some of us the work has only begun. Merging the holiday decorations with the fall season seems to be a simple task and ideally our Thanksgiving decorations will not overlapping with left over Halloween decorations. In a previous post we posed a couple options for a Thanksgiving centerpieces that were universal. There are a number of two different options displayed in these pictures that can assist you with creating the right theme. Also consider decorating the foyer of your home. You can decorate with traditional themed fall colors, or choose colors and patterns that match your home decor. In doing so, you are able to accent the theme of your own parlor area without taking away from the traditional earth tones associated with autumn.
